The National Law Journal Names Proventus Best Legal Marketing Agency in the Midwest

The National Law Journal released its fifth annual Best of the Midwest awards in its widely read NLJ 500 edition, awarding top honors to Proventus in all five marketing categories for the second consecutive year.

Proventus founder speaks at LMA event in Indianapolis

Proventus Consulting President Burton Taylor spoke last week at the Legal Marketing Association Midwest Region luncheon held in Indianapolis.

With a presentation themed around using public relations to drive business development, Taylor served as the featured speaker and presented a case for why law firm marketing departments should look at the job through a different lens. He emphasized PR professionals should not “be in PR for PR’s sake” but rather to achieve a very specific outcome: generating new business for the firm.

“Too often, media relations is thought of as a community affairs function of a business, but in the law firm environment — where the products we are selling are the attorneys who work for our firms — public relations can be an effective business development tool,” Taylor said.

Taylor’s presentation focused on quantifiable measures and case studies to demonstrate the value strategic media relations efforts can add to a firm’s business development. He showed examples of how business development managers can rely on PR colleagues to achieve media visibility and third-party endorsements to drive the desired outcomes.

Effective forms of public relations cited included traditional PR, thought leadership, third-party endorsements, social media, owned media and paid media.

“I was honored for LMA to invite me out for this event, and I really enjoyed the chance to speak in front of so many talented professionals,” Taylor said.

LMA is a community that brings together all types of industry specialists from firms of all sizes. Consultants and vendors, lawyers, marketers from other professions, and marketing students can connect and share their collective knowledge.

Business Journal Features Proventus’ Expansion in Legal Marketing Vertical

The Kansas City Business Journal recently published an article on Proventus Consulting’s recent growth into the Denver market, which was a move intended to position the firm to better serve its clients legal marketing and public relations needs.

The February feature, titled “Growth spurs legal marketing firm to open a Denver office,” highlights Proventus expansion, as well as its success as an “alternative” to what similar agencies offer from the coasts.

“Much like the law firms it serves throughout the Midwest, Mission-based Proventus Consulting LLC is growing because it can offer clients a better value proposition than its coastal competitors,” the Business Journal reported. “Now they’re bringing that experience to smaller, boutique law firms, something that has proved to be a huge need, which in turn led the company to expand by opening an office in Denver.”

“There is not only a market in Kansas City but a national vertical in legal marketing that is not filled out,” Proventus founder Burton Taylor told the Business Journal. “We offer the same experience as a coastal firm, but we offer it with a value and work ethic that is unlike what some folks have experienced in the past.”

The Business Journal points out that “It’s a business plan reaping nationwide attention,” siting Proventus Consulting being named the National Law Journal’s No. 1 Public Relations Firm for Law Firms in its inaugural Best of the Midwest rankings in 2016, just four years after the firm’s founding. “That has enhanced the company’s credibility with law firms nationwide, helping the firm to be seen as a viable alternative.”

Nancy Rigdon, who has more than a decade of marketing and communications experience, including the last three years with Proventus, will lead the new Denver expansion.

“Nancy is not just planting a flag, but she’s exploring office space, and we’re going to build a team around her in Denver,” Taylor told the Business Journal. “The Denver office is in response to our clients. In certain instances, if your firm has multiple members in Best of the Bar, it may also consider including the news in its print or electronic newsletters.

Update Your Existing Biography — Attorney biographies are the most trafficked pages of a law firm website and, as such, should be kept as up to date as possible. Any time you receive an honor or award, you should immediately update your website biography to reflect the recent accolade and make the same changes to your LinkedIn profile, which also has a section for featuring awards and honors.

Update Existing Firm Materials — As new awards and honors are received, your law firm should routinely incorporate the recognitions into existing marketing materials, brochures, business development packets, etc., to make certain these differentiators are highlighted appropriately as you’re communicating with prospective clients.

As you can see, however, the greatest opportunity of those highlighted here is the chance to network with your peers on the Best of the Bar. New business is rarely realized from an award on its own and much more commonly earned through relationship building within your industry.
